Motivating Others – 3 Reasons Why Do It

by Sharon Hiebing | March 8th, 2010

Last week I wrote a post called “Motivating Others is an Individual Thing”.  It identified different ways you can motivate your team or employees.  So today I ask the questions, “Why Do It?”

1.  First, because for most people a paycheck or commission check is not motivation enough.  Especially if the person is in an autonomous position where they work alone quite a bit.  They may need a reason to keep doing what they’re doing.

2.  Second, when the going gets tough, having something there that you can use to remind your people about can be just what is needed to get them back on track and refocused.

3.  Lastly, I believe that if you are part of team, using motivation can create a momentum that otherwise would be impossible to duplicate.  It can create a competition of sorts, or you can create motivators that the team can set a goal and work towards together.

Without motivation, your team or company could go stagnant.  You could have one or two individuals who could turn into a cancer and demotivate everyone else.  Motivation is fun and exciting if done right, and most people do like to participate.  I know in pursuit of my goal of achieving lifetime residual income, having strong motivators keeps me going.

Now some people would argue that it’s not their responsibility motivating others to do what they should be doing on their own.  Others may get annoyed that they have to go to the trouble at all.  But that’s part of being a leader.  Not everyone is going to do what you’d like them to do, so it’s much easier to find a way that serves the greater good and keeps your people on track.

So what motivates you?
