15 Ways to Implement a Gratitude Plan

by Sharon Hiebing | May 6th, 2010

Smart business owners know that by implementing a simple gratitude marketing plan, they can see huge returns on their small investment of time and money.  People like to be appreciated, especially customers!  And when they are, they will repay you in kind by referring you to others and using your services over and over.

However, I would take it one step further.  I believe that a true gratitude plan should not be just marketing about your business to your clients, but rather should extend to everyone in your life, including  your sphere of influence, friends and family.

Often, when talking to people about my printable greeting cards online service, I am asked what kinds of cards they should send?  Well, let’s just take the most obvious form of gratitude, a simple thank you,” and start with that:

  1. Thank you for your help.
  2. Thank you for your support.
  3. Thank you for your exceptional service.
  4. Thank you for being a customer.
  5. Thanks for choosing us.
  6. Thanks for the tip.
  7. Thanks for the compliment.
  8. Thanks for the gift.
  9. Thanks for the great job.
  10. Thanks for volunteering.
  11. Thank you for believing in me.
  12. Thank you for caring.
  13. Thank you for giving.
  14. Thank you for understanding.
  15. Thank you for the referral.

Fifteen different ways just to say thank you. Imagine if you added in cards for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, keeping in touch, following up after a meeting or event, etc.

Do you think people would start to think you were a pretty genuine and caring person?

Do you think that positive response would start to have  an effect on everything you do, including your personal life and business?

Do you think you’d feel pretty great about yourself and have higher self-esteem?

Of course you would!  So the next time you tell yourself you don’t have the time or money to implement a simple gratitude plan, I would have you ask yourself, what would be the consequences of not having one?

I love the concept of a Gratitude Plan. Your customers are the best marketers of your business. Organic growth through customer advocates is probably the best way to sustain growth.

Sharon, what perfect timing as I wanted to “thank you” for referring me to Send Out Cards. I was hesitant about joining a MLM company but after seeing and experiencing the product first hand I embraced the idea of having the power of that personal touch that I could extend to all of my clients. I’ve been sending birthday cards, thank you cards, gifts and I’m just getting started! So thank you Sharon and I can’t wait to grow my business with you.

ps-thanks for the book – I’m looking forward to reading it.

Hi Sharon, I believe that these days customers and clients could use more gratitude and simply ‘thank you’s.’ As an exercise, when I walk into say a big box store or other establishment, I consciously listen for that “thank you” versus a simple “here you are. Have a nice day.” I’ve definitely seen differences. I love how Starbucks almost always says “thank you” after I purchase something. The gratitude shows.

I myself make efforts to thank my clients in multiple ways including emails, phone calls, in-person and even client appreciation events. Whenever I make a phone call to a client, sometimes I get a “thank you so much for calling.”

I definitely believe your gratitude plan is a great way to remember to thank our clients. I think I’ll print it out and stick it on my desk!

    Thanks for the tip!

    Sincerely,
    Lee

Lee, I always say marketing is like a wheel and cards are just one spoke – you’re very smart to use multiple methods of staying in touch with your clients. Donna, thanks for sharing with your fans – that means a lot to me!
