LIVING IN BELIZE – “What My Expat Life Looks Like Now” 5/30/13

Wow, can’t believe how long since I blogged last.  After we returned from our whirlwind five-week trip to Guatemala and El Salvador (hopefully you saw all the pictures on my Facebook fan page), we settled in for the long wait of gathering all the various documents we need so that I can apply for U.S. Immigration for Nigel.  So no, we are not back in the States yet.

Yes, I’m still alive!!

But we were bored with Cayo. And nothing against San Ignacio Town, but after being there for three years, we felt like a change of scenery was in order.  So last week we packed up and moved to Placencia. Placencia is gorgeous – it’s about a 20 mile strip of peninsula located in Southern Belize, bordered by the lagoon and Maya Mountains on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other.

Placencia beach – love being by the ocean!

We scored an incredible long-term rental deal in a cute cabin on the lagoon side – $450 usd all-inclusive (rent, utilities including wifi and cable TV, garbage, and fully furnished with a washing machine!).  The best part of the house is the screened in back porch area, where I sit on my laptop a good portion of the day and look for new ways to educate myself or propel myself forward.

This is our cute little cabin on the lagoon – porch is in the back. There’s a 2 bedroom available right next door – wanna be my neighbor?

For a studio apartment, the kitchen is huge! Loving being able to cook again after not having a home for three months!

You may have noticed the new banner on the right hand side of this page, which is one of my new ventures. I found this new MLM company a few days ago, and signed up immediately.  I mean, who doesn’t want to earn $200K? Plus, it’s free to join until June 6, 2013, since the company is in pre-launch, so I have nothing to lose. Not surprisingly, I’ve already had many sign ups.

For those of you anti-MLMers, I don’t want to hear it.  I was Top 100 with Send Out Cards (SOC) before I moved to Belize, and I still get checks every month from them for only a year and half’s worth of work. And while I still use SOC personally (it’s a great tool for those living overseas – online greeting cards and gifts), it was way too labor intensive to grow, especially here in Belize. So Buy Your Own House (BYOH) is much more my speed.

I plan to use the money I earn from BYOH to start investing in real estate in Houston, Texas when I move back. I’ve really missed being a real estate investor the last few years and can’t wait to get back to it. So that’s another thing I’ve been spending a ton of time on. Researching zip codes and finding good deals (if you have any, send them my way lol!).

Nige and I have also been having a lot of fun trying out the restaurant scene here in Placencia.  My two favorites so far are De Barcelona Beach Tapa Bar (formerly located at Robert’s Grove and now in the Village proper) and The Purple Space Monkey (who has seen a massive remodel and transformation).  They both have excellent food and great locations.  We are, however, still suffering from sticker shock here. Besides the great housing deal we got, everything else is more expensive, especially restaurants! Oh well, that’s the price you pay for living down South, but it’s worth it to us.

So I’ll try not to go so long next time before I blog again. Amazing how time flies!

LIVING IN BELIZE – “Santa Elena, Belize House for Rent on the River with a Pool – Rare!!” 2/4/13

Red Roof Property Management is really excited about our newest listing.  It is the first time we have ever had a long-term home for rent with a pool!  Believe it or not, they are quite rare here in the Cayo District.

This home also has the bonus of being on the Macal River, where you can watching the La Ruta Maya Canoe races, or just relax in the amazing gardens, which have all kinds of fruit trees, like banana, cherry, dwarf peach, golden plum, avocado, limes, and plantains!

The best part is you won’t have to worry about any of the maintenance, since a pool man and gardener will take care of everything for you.

The home itself is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath fully furnished place.  The kitchen has tons of cabinets and the living room a comfy sofa and tv.

The master suite has a king size bed, ceiling fan, wardrobe, a nice large bathroom with shower and American style washer and dryer. There’s even a cool native mural on the wall!

The second bedroom has an a/c unit in it, and the third can be used as an office or multi-purpose room.

Santa Elena is San Ignacio’s sister city, so this house is located maybe five minutes from the bridge where you can quickly be at the produce market, bank, one of the many restaurants, or bars.

It is being offered for $800 USD, which includes your electric, water, yard and pool maintenance.  Also, the owner is leaving her Smart “Dongle” wifi internet flash drive and cell phone for the new tenants – you just add your gigs or credit.

LIVING IN BELIZE – “New Coffee House in San Ignacio – L.S. Cafe” 1/11/13

Recently while having my oil changed on my Geo Tracker, Debbie, the mechanic’s wife, asked me if I’d seen the coffee shop that had just opened up on the double road (Joseph Andrews Drive) next door to the key duplication shop. She was just raving about how cute it was, so I decided to stop in on my way to my pedicure yesterday and check it out.

L.S. Café is in a very nice spot, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, where the only other coffee shop I know of ((Espresso) is located.  Right away, I was pleased with their menu selection and prices too!

There is a very cozy and inspired decorating theme at L.S.Cafe, compared to a lot of places that don’t even attempt to offer a nice décor for their patrons. The lights above the seating area actually change colors – it’s quite fun!

And, most importantly for me, if I am to spend any time at a coffee shop, it has to have a bathroom, which L.S. Café does.

The owner, Jim, greeted me and was exceedingly friendly.  He is originally from Taiwan, but has been in Belize for 17 years. Given that he is only 31 years old, I joked he is more Belizean than Taiwanese, and he agreed with me.  He came here originally to attend university, and hasn’t left since.

His dad owns a fabulous bakery around the corner, so they sell some of their baked goods as well.

One thing I really appreciated about Jim was his customer service. He made sure to ask how sweet I wanted my Café Mocha (which was delicious, by the way) – light, medium, or heavy.  And when the girl at a shop next door came in to order, he told her he’d bring it on over to her when it was ready. And because it was my first time there, he gave me a $.50 discount on my mocha – nice!

I think this place is an easy place to get in and out of, with ample parking, for your morning cup of Joe, without having to deal with the downtown traffic. Or it could make a great meeting spot.  If you want to check it out, here are their hours, which Jim may be tweaking in the near future.

Do you love coffee, or are you more of a tea person?

LIVING IN BELIZE – “Red Roof Property Management is a Tropic Air Agent” 1/8/13

Some of you may or may not know that Tropic Air opened a new landing strip in San Ignacio on December 10, 2012.  This is a much needed hub, as formerly the closest one was in Belmopan, a 35-40 minute drive away.

Large well marked signs lead you to the turn off to the landing strip on the Benque Highway in San Ignacio

The dirt road to the San Ignacio Airport

Since we have a lot of vacation rentals, I have been offering our guests the option of flying from either the Belize City International Airport, Belize City Municipal, or the Ambergris Caye/San Pedro airport to San Ignacio now (the only routes they are offering, for the time being).

Turn left here please

The airport is right across the way from the turn to a popular Cayo lodge

Tropic Air saw me mentioning them on Facebook and let us know we could become agents for them, which is a great customer service tool for us. All guests need to do is let us know their travel dates, number of people in the party, and their arrival and departure locations, and we can set up everything in advance for them. When they check in for the flight, they can pay at that time.

Parking for at least a few cars!

Our vacation rental guests aren’t the only ones we can help. In fact, if you want to fly anywhere in the country via Tropic Air, we can help you too.  I’m sure some of my Wealth Ship Relocation clients will be using this option now as well, since a lot of times their itinerary is tight and flying saves a bunch of time.

This is just one more way Red Roof has of making people’s visit to Belize easier and more convenient.  Hope we can help you one day in the near future!

LIVING IN BELIZE – “New Tenants and New Guests” 12/5/12

Yesterday was a divide and conquer day.  We had multiple people arriving in Belize that had to be greeted, so Nige and I had to split up.  The first couple was one of my Wealth Ships’ Relocation clients who were moving here from the States to the Bullet Tree river side house for rent I had blogged about previously. Here’s a reminder of the house.

They had hired us for our airport pick up service, and since they had two dogs, four suitcases and themselves, Nige drove his car and his mom drove mine to the airport (we had to make sure we had enough room).

While they did that, I had to meet the guests checking in to the Avana Villa.  They wanted me to give them a quick tour of downtown, so I took a taxi (a whopping $2 bze or $1 usd) from Bullet Tree to downtown San Ignacio, and gave them a tour of the market, Burns Avenue, and some other notable places.

Then we headed up to the villa.  They had booked the Penthouse Suite, and the first thing they did was open the French doors and take in the amazing views.

Since I met Carmen and Frank on my Wealth Ships’ fan page, and they are avid readers of my blog, I felt like I’d known them forever.  Since everyone was hungry and I had to go back to town to wait for Nige to pick me up, they were nice enough to drive me and we had a bite to eat at Ko-Ox-Han-Nah’s. We had a lot in common, as they are property managers in Daytona Beach, Florida, so we had lots of notes to compare.

Eventually, Nige got back to town and picked me up.  Our new tenants for Bullet Tree were so amazed by the house – they absolutely loved it – especially the river view from their deck.  They thanked us profusely for organizing everything for them, but since they’d been up since 2 a.m., we excused ourselves so they could get some rest.

Do you look forward to meeting people you’ve met online for the first time?

LIVING IN BELIZE – “New Belize House for Rent in Succotz Village” 12/4/12

Red Roof Property Management is pleased to announce a Belize rental home that will be available on or about January 18, 2013 – perfect for those of you starting your year right and moving to Belize!

The home is located in the village of San Jose Succotz, about seven miles West of San Ignacio, and it comes fully furnished.

The living room has a couch, several chairs, a tv, and a bar.

The kitchen has an eat-in area and is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need to cook and serve meals (except the food, of course, lol!).

The home is a one bedroom, one bath concrete style.

This is the view from your porch, where you can sit and read a book or be greeted by one of the local villagers selling you some tortillas for $1 bze ($.50 usd).

The house is located one street over from the Western Highway and the Mopan River, where the entrance to the famous ruin, Xunantunich, is.  If you don’t have a car, you can easily catch a taxi or bus on the highway.

This home is being offered for $400 USD, which includes electric, water, and yard maintenance.  For more information about this rental, see full details here:

LIVING IN BELIZE – “New Belize House for Rent – Mennonite Style Cottage” 11/27/12

Red Roof Property Management is pleased to announce a new Belize House for Rent in the village of San Jose Succotz.  The cabin will be available February 1, 2013.

The cottage sits on about six acres and is quite literally a working farm with geese, ducks, chickens, pigs, and goats.

The cottage was built by the owners from the ground up in the traditional Mennonite style that is common here in the Cayo District of Belize.

As you can see, there is ample room for a vehicle if you have one.

The cabin is completely furnished. It has a full kitchen with a butane refrigerator, stove, and stainless steel sink.

There’s also a large pantry with a ceiling fan in the kitchen area as well.

There is a double bed in the bedroom with a fan.

As well as a desk and a futon for visitors.

The bathroom has a shower stall and everything else you’d expect  :-P

One of the nicest features of the cottage is the screened in porch with a hammock, perfect for lazing away the hot Belizean days!

The cottage will rent for $250 USD/month.  For more information on this rental, please visit our website.

LIVING IN BELIZE – “I’m Back & It Feels Like Vacation” 11/16/12

So glad to be back every one.  The last two days have been a bit stressful in the technology world.  Wednesday afternoon I received an email from my web host informing me that they had done a major upgrade, in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week. Lovely, DreamHost – kind of an unwritten rule you do these things off hours.

This wouldn’t have been so bad, I guess, if it had gone right, but alas, it did not.  Pretty soon, I was getting inundated with emails and Facebook messages from all my loyal readers that my site was down. Madaz (that’s Kriol for Oh My Goodness, or in some circles, Mother F*****)!!  After contacting Dream Host, who, in their defense, did get back to me right away, I was informed that the server Wealth Ships lives on crashed (I’m sure as a result of their upgrade, but they weren’t admitting that). So they had to transfer all the sites, mine included, to a new server.

Finally, after being down for two days, yesterday afternoon I came back online.  As I always try to do in these situations, I looked for the positive and tried to enjoy my couple days off from blogging (even though I kind of felt like I was playing hooky).  I’m still upset that this debacle may have cost me some businesses, but what can you do?  I’ve been with Dream Host for years, and they’ve never let me down before, so I have no plans of switching hosts. But if it ever happens again…..

This week Nige and I have been at a house sitting gig for clients in Bullet Tree.  I’m totally enjoying it because when we do this, Nige’s mom comes and stays at our house. She loves our house, since it’s on the river and there’s a ton of nature and wildlife there. She says it’s like being on vacation.  I love it when she stays there because what we do is we buy all the food, she cooks every night, and then Nige goes and picks it up and brings it back to where we are staying now (the two houses are quite close).

Not only do I get to stay in a nice house with a pool right now, but I don’t have to cook! I feel like I’m on vacation too.  So even though I don’t usually blog on Saturday’s, tomorrow I will post a “make up” blog for you all. I think you’ll like it – it’s pictures of some gardens we just had re-done at one of our long-term rentals.

Until then, thanks for being so patient with my site the last two days. I really appreciate all of you who cared enough to tell me, who helped me test to let me know it was back up correctly, and who told me how much they missed me. I do feel loved J

Do you try to always look for the bright side when things go wrong?
