LIVING IN BELIZE – “Photo Shoot & Living Off Grid” – 2/22/12

February 22nd, 2012 | 3 Comments

Well despite the fact that our new landlord failed to mention that water to the house gets cut off during lunch time and all night long, he did hold good on his word and have his worker come over yesterday morning to fix all the doors in the house. With time, due to the humidity and heat, they have become a bit swollen and hard to open and close. Also, he wanted to re-varnish them.

But we couldn’t stick around for the work. Yesterday, we had our photo shoot for our new Red Roof Property Management website. Our web designer, Maureen, is friends with the owner of Mr. Greedy’s Pizza, Jonathan, and she asked him if he would take the photos, since he’s a very good photographer. Lucky for us, he said yes!

We started at one of our house sitting clients’ home. I’ve mentioned them before – they were the ones recently featured on the latest House Hunters International episode filmed in Belize. Since their house is already famous, they were more than happy to be immortalized on Red Roof’s website, ha-ha!

They were such sports too. Our web designer had tons of different poses she wanted us to do, and we had to stand for minutes on end in the same position, smiling and looking happy, until she thought Jonathan got the perfect shot.

It was lots of fun though. We had to bring different props to effectively show in the photos what it is we do. I feel so blessed to have found Maureen – she really knows her stuff, and our website will look amazing. She says the end of the week it will be ready, so the big unveiling is soon!

We actually visited one more clients’ home after that, but the lighting was not cooperating, so we called it a day. But we got everything we needed. After dropping off Maureen and Jonathan, we went and got a quick bite of lunch (shrimp chow mein from Jacky’s Restaurant).

Next we had to head to a new leasing and management prospect’s home, that some of our soon-to-be clients referred us to. We’ve really been getting a lot of referrals lately, which is tremendously flattering, not to mention helpful to us in growing our business.

This home is set on the Mopan River, about five miles from San Ignacio Town, on a remote farm. There are horses, and the house itself has a huge wrap-around porch and an above-ground pool.

The owner wants to know if it would make a good rental or not. It’s a 3 bedroom, 1 bath home, furnished very nicely, and done in a very high-end style, with tile throughout on the floors, counters, and shower.

The only issue is it is truly “off-grid,” which means no electricity. At night, there is a generator, but during the day, you can’t really use any electricity, or you’ll run out. So, the home would definitely cater to people who love nature and don’t mind getting away from all of the electronic conveniences of day-to-day life, like TV, internet, a/c, etc. At least the appliances run off of butane!

Personally, I think it would make a wonderful family-style rental for the right kind of people. What do you think? Would you be inclined to rent a vacation home like this, or do you need modern conveniences, even on vacation?
